It’s beginning to look like we have a nominee for the 2008 Presidential Election.
John McCain is a national hero, of that there is no doubt. However many in the Republican Party question his loyalty to the great Republican principles. McCain aligned himself with liberal Senator Fiengold and ultra-liberal Teddy Kennedy on matters that are important to Republicans, even voting initially against the Bush tax cuts.
McCain’s position on amnesty for illegal aliens see to be the most offensive from those who talk to me about his candidacy. He often says he “got the message.” He claims the message to be “the people want the borders protected first.” First before what is the question. First before amnesty for millions of illegal aliens? Or, first before we begin to repatriate those who came here illegally back to their country of origin? Most agree repatriation will be painful and time consuming and must be handled in a compassionate manner but most Republicans and American citizens want it to happen.
I think McCain’s presidential ambitions boil down to two things. One is his position on giving citizenship to illegals already in this country and secondly, who he picks as his running mate.
It’s hard for me to recall an election that spins on who the VP candidate is as much as this election. There are two reasons for the importance of McCain’s choice for VP. First, because of McCain’s advanced age his successor is vitally important and secondly, McCain must find a running mate who can fill in the philosophical gap between his record in the senate and historical Republican principles.
Let’s all work hard the make candidate McCain President McCain but hang onto our Republican principals at the same time. Those things together will give us security and peace for years to come.

Congratulations are in order for our nominee for the Alabama Senate District 32, Trip Pittman.
This summer has been hot in more ways than one. Our Republican Primary and Runnoff was hotly contested with five candidates. Any one of them could have served with distinction I believe but there is only one opening.
In all my years in the political arena, I have seldom seen anyone build an organization like Trip Pittman built. Trip, his people and his signs were everywhere all the time it seemed. I think they knocked on just about every door in Baldwin County. Almost all of Trip’s money came from Baldwin County contributors. I told Trip and his campaign manager Ray LaPierre that it was a congressional grade campaign and I mean it.
Trip started with virtually no name ID and the Montgomery pundits rated him dead last in all of their pre-election prognostications. Trip’s race should encourage all who aspire to elected office.
Trip is in the enviable position of not being obligated to any political power broker, just the people of Baldwin County. That’s a remarkable feat when you consider all the big mules who wanted to control the outcome of this election. The are all scrambling to get onboard Trip’s train but I’m afraid the train has already left the station. They don’t own anybody.
Now we are faced with the task of making sure that Trip is indeed our next senator. Turn-out is small and if all the Democrats go to the poll and the Republicans are complacent and stay home, we could be in for a surprize. Don’t let that happen, go vote!
God bless you.

Randy McKinney a Gulf Shores Businessman and Trip Pittman a Daphne Businessman.

You are encouraged to get to know them and get behind the candidate of your choice.
We will introduce you to our nominee at the September 15 Executive Committee meeting, please plan to be there at 10 AM, Rpbertsdale City Hall.
Good luck, Randy and Trip!

WOW!
Was that last election wild or what?
The Governor won big but we lost some important races.
While we picked up two senate seats occupied by Democrats we lost one of our important senate allies in Democrat Senator Gerald Dial from Lineville. While a Democrat, Dial always joined the conservative caucus of which the Republicans dominate.
Our guys have a huge fight for the next four years. We need to encourage them all we can. I appreciate them all and I hope you do. If you do, let them know. They need to hear it.
We have a great Executive Committee for the next four years. Some wonderful people. We elected our new slate of officers and are now busy rewriting our by-laws and it’s long overdue.
You’d be proud of our by-laws committee. The chair of each of our five districts are members plus one other member from each district. Our legal counsel, Municipal Judge Mary Murchison is our chairperson and she is good and thorough. Our vice-chair is our parlimentarian Peg Vanover and she is a real by-law guru.
We have some differences in philosophy but I believe we will end up with a document our executive committee will support and that will serve us well.
Districts 2 and 4 are teaming up on our annual spring event and they are looking at Craft Farms Golf Club and Course for the location. The headliner may be Senator John McCain and other presidential contenders. Everyone needs to participate in this event for it to be successful.
Committee chairs need to prepare their budgets for submission at the next executive committee meeting..
Spring has sprung and so has your executive committee. Be looking for a lot of new and exciting things.
I appreciate you all.

I hope all of our readers had a great holiday season!
Now that the holidays and the inauguration are behind us, it will soon be time for us to go to work.
The first item on my agenda is to meet with all five Vice-Chairmen. As most of you know, we have new faces leading all of our districts. They are: District One, Anne Pedersen; District Two, Britton Bonner; District Three, Sam Mitchell, District Four, Mike Diehl and District Five, Kevin Diamond. All of these men and women are good people and good Republicans. I hope you will all get to know them and get behind them.
After your Chairman and Vice-Chairmen meet, I will call a meeting of the Steering Committee and together we will develop an agenda for the next two years and schedule the next Executive Committee Meeting.
The by-laws require the Executive Committee to meet at least once quarterly. Since this is an off year, my inclinations are to schedule quarterly meetings for 2007 and bimonthly meetings for 2008. Most of the work of the party should be done in the districts but the goals and general direction should be established by and through the Executive Committee. We should all be moving toward the same goal with a similar vision and general approach. “No man is an island” and likewise “together we stand and divided we fall.”
Our biggest challenge as a political party is to recruit and elect more Republicans. If you read the newspapers you have seen how the last election played out with the organization of the Alabama House of Representatives and the Alabama Senate. Even though we elected more Republicans, we lost power in the Alabama Legislature because we are a growing minority that is threatening Democrat Party control of Alabama.
Thanks to all of you, the Baldwin County Republican Party contributed almost fifty thousand dollars to legislative races in the state. We set a new standard for the state party and I expect the Alabama Republican Executive Committee to ask all the county organizations to contribute to legislative races in 2010. We basically raised the fifty thousand in two years so I hope we will have at least twice that much to contribute in 2010. We will discuss and establish a goal in our future meetings. Additionally, Baldwin Countians individually contributed many hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican candidates both in Baldwin County and statewide.
Soon I will complete the chairman’s appointments to the various committees and will notify the members of the Executive Committee of those appointments.
We need the help of every Republican. I hope we can count on you. If we can, I expect you to be a member of the team. If you can’t be a team member I expect you to let me know so we can find someone who wants to contribute. We must say goodbye to backbiting and all pull together.
Thanks for all you do and God bless you and your family this year.
Sincerely,
Don McGriff

Dear Fellow Republican,
I want you to know how much I appreciate your support for my re-election as Chairman of the Baldwin County Republican Party. The many calls, emails and notes of congratulations touched me deeply and I will never forget them, or you.
And to those who supported someone else I hope you will join us to make the Republican Party stronger than ever. All are welcome and we have a place for you.
Ronald Reagan said “it would be amazing how much we could accomplish if we didn’t care who received the credit.” He also penned the phrase, “Speak no evil of another Republican,” his eleventh commandment. Let us make these two admonitions our New Years Resolution. You will be amazed how much we can accomplish if we do. I hope I can live by these principles. If I slip, I hope you will remind me.
We have some big races coming up in 2008. The Presidency, a U.S. Senate seat, a number of judges and perhaps others. John McCain made a generous contribution to us this year and I have received a number of communications from other national candidates. Because of the earlier primary in 2008, Alabama will be important and if Alabama is important, Baldwin County will be important.
So… we have a lot to do together and we can have a lot of fun doing it. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you.
God bless you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. Remember our troops during the holidays. Please pray for our president.

Many of us are finishing four years or more on the Baldwin County Republican Executive Committee. Others are beginning new terms.
It is with a sense of sadness that we say goodbye to those whom are departing. We are excited about the future and anticipate working with the new members who have stepped forward to fill their shoes.
At our December 9th meeting we will elect members to lead the Republican effort for the next two years of the next four year term. I hope we can all move into that process with true Republican congeniality. We differ somewhat in ability and philosphy but we share our Republicanism with pride. Let’s remember the Reagan spirit that taught us to never speak ill of another Republican.
The new term reminds me of several new beginings in my life. I first remember my Marine Corps Drill Instructor telling us to look at the person on either side and recognize that one of them will not be there when we graduate from boot camp. The same exhortation was given by my law school dean.
My hope is that all of you who have qualified to serve on the executive committee will do so with dedication and committment. Whoever leads will need your attendance and participation in the activities designed to advance the Republican principles, candidates and office holders. As my mother told me, “Whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord.” That’s good advice don’t you think? If we all do that, we will be successful.
God bless you and thanks for allowing me serve.

Finally
By Don McGriff
Election 2006 is rapidly coming to an end. Thank goodness!
Either I’m getting old or the election cycle is getting longer. Maybe the two-party system is catching up with me.
When we had a one-party/two-party system, the primary settled all matters sooner. You remember that don’t you?
Pre 1986 Alabama was totally democrat. Except … we really had a two-party system. Liberal Democrats and conservative Democrats. The liberal Democrats are the current Democrats and the conservative Democrats are now the Republicans.
Do you remember 1986? One of the liberal candidates for Governor (Bill Baxley) was in the runoff with the conservative candidate (Charlie Graddick). In the runoff, Graddick encouraged those who voted Republican in the primary to vote Democrat for him in the runoff. Graddick won.
When Graddick won, the liberal controlled Democrat (My term) Executive Committee took the nomination away from the winner and gave the nomination to the liberal Bill Baxley.
Shazam! The two-party system was born in Alabama and the election cycle became much longer.
As Chairman of the Republican Executive Committee in Baldwin County I thank Bill Baxley and the liberal Democrats. Without liberal meddling in the democratic process, we would still be electing only Democrats in Alabama.
Here’s the point. We have played two-party for exactly twenty years, electing statewide Republican constitutional officers occasionally but never controlling the legislature. This binds the hands of Republican governors.
Good conservative legislation is always compromised away to get anything accomplished. Union bosses, trial lawyers and every other fringe group in Alabama have more control than Alabama citizens.
Fortunately, there is a magic bullet that can change all of the above and give government back to the people. What is the secret you ask? Well, lean close to the newspaper and I will tell you.
VOTER TURNOUT! That’s the secret. Baldwin County is Republican. Duh.
It’s that simple, get off the sofa. Put up the fishing pole. Turn off the TV. Get your blank off the golf course. GO VOTE!
This is still America. Our ancestors died for your right to vote. Voting is more important than watching fireworks on the Fourth of July.
A vote in Baldwin County counts all over Alabama. A vote in Baldwin County offsets a vote in Greene and Wilcox County.
Can I ask a favor of you for our fallen heros? Please go vote.

THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER
OLD VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he’s a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible
MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he’sa fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving. CBS, NBC, ABC & CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, “It’s Not Easy Being Green.”
Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, “We shall overcome.” Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.
Ted Kennedy & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Dan Rather that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his “fair share.
Finally, the EEOC drafts the “Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act,” retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.
Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients. The ant loses the case.
The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around him because he doesn’t maintain it.
The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Vote Republican
(Thanks to Executive Committee Member Tom Grey for the above)

America is such a special place. The American experience is unique among the nations of the world. We have much for which to be thankful.
We are blessed to live in the U.S. but we cannot take our peaceful existence for granted. Many envy what we enjoy as Americans. More frightening is the demonstrated fact that some want to destroy America and all she stands for.
An old but true saying is that “Freedom isn’t Free”. American blood has been shed and bodies buried in many countries around the world. Bodies of Americans fighting not to conquer the world but to keep the world free from dictators and despots who wanted to conquer and enslave the world’s population for their own evil desires.
The words of the Marine Corps hymn say it best. ’’From the Halls of Montezuma
to the Shores of Tripoli; We fight our country’s battles in the air, on land and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom…’’
“Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze from dawn to setting sun; we have fought in every clime and place where we could take a gun; In the snow of far-off Northern landsand in sunny tropic scenes; You will find us always on the job.’’
Alabamians, all Americans, and the world owe a great debt of gratitude to U.S. veterans past and present, to active duty troops and reservists including Alabama’s National Guard.
On October 7th Baldwin County Republicans invite you to our annual Fall Family Picnic. We will honor all those in uniform who have protected our country. Governor Bob Riley and Congressman Jo Bonner will make special presentations to our veterans and serving troops.
Attorney General Troy King, Chief Justice Drayton Nabers and our candidate for Lt. Governor, Luther Strange will also address the citizens of Baldwin County. Many other statewide and local candidates will greet you there.
The food and fun are FREE, compliments of Baldwin County Republicans, contributors and advertisers. You are invited regardless of age, sex, religion or party affiliation.
We moved our celebration to the population center of the county; the PZK hall on highway 104, just west of Robertsdale in Silverhill.
Come and bring your family, you’ll be glad you did.
See you there, I hope.
Don McGriff
P.S. Speakers begin at 11:15 and Governor Riley at 12 Noon.
“Speak No Evil of Another Republican” - Ronald Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment
Comments Off
9/7/2006
Many believe Ronald Reagan is he greatest president who ever served in the office. Why was Reagan so successful and the Republican Party so great during his time?
I believe it’s because Ronald Reagan was a loyal person and he expected loyalty from his fellow Republicans. He believed unity and loyalty were so important to success he coined the phrase “Speak no evil of another Republican,” and to emphasize it’s importance he titled the phrase “The Eleventh Comandment.”
It’s funny but the Bible has the same admonission for its followers. To not talk behind one’s back and spread gossip and rumor. Instead, to go to that person in private and thereby help him or get the facts straight for yourself. Not to waste your energy being a trouble maker. Do you feel better when you run another Republican down? I doubt it.
This is such an important time for our party nationally, statewide and locally. We stand at a historic time in our history. We can keep the House and Senate in Washington so our President will be successful, or we can become divided and give the House to the Democrats who will spend the next two years trying to impeach our President.
On the state scene, we have our first real chance of taking the Alabama Senate and drastically changing the House allowing our Governor have a real chance to be successful with his legislative package.
To do that, we must be a unified force. I was a U.S. Marine. We learned the importance of being a unified fighting force. We knew a fellow marine was always protecting our back. We never turned on our wounded when they were down. In short, we were a team, Semper Fi. Semper Fi means always faithful.
Do we want to burn the energy and the enthusiasm we need to put Bob Riley back in office? To elect Luther Strange and Troy King? To change the lagislature?
Or, would we rather spend our energy attacking and mistrusting our own? Another great Reagan quote is, “it would be amazing what we could accomplish if no-one cared who received the credit.” (paraphrase)
The choice is ours. Yours and mine. Which do you want?
Will you join the Ronald Reagan branch of the party? Commit with me now, that you will not be used to spread doubt and discord amongst us. Commit with me that you will build up your fellow Republicans. That you will become a lean mean Democrat fighting machine and not turn on our own?
Make that commitment to Governor Riley, Luther Strange, Troy King and all of the candidates who need us healthy, enthusiatic and working full speed toward the November election.
If you do that, you will sleep better at night, I guarantee it.
I appreciate all of you, you are of great value to the Republican team.
Its been a great priviledge to be your servant in this office of Chairman.

Over 80% turnout in recent elections! That’s what the turnout was in Iraq.
Turnout statewide in Alabama last week was 38% and in Baldwin County it was only 32% with 35,355 voters. That’s pitiful isn’t it?
If you think that’s pitiful, do you remember the heated 2004 Republican Primary race between Lt. Governor Steve Windom and then Congressman Bob Riley? In that primary the turnout was only 17% in Baldwin County! Imagine that. I don’t want to put a guilt trip on anyone but don’t you think we’re taking our Democracy a little for granted when we don’t even bother to vote?
The Run-off election is scheduled for July 18th. Run-off elections normally turn out fewer voters than the primary. If only 32% of the primary voters go to the polls in the run-off; a candidate could win office with only 10% of qualified voters. Is that what Baldwin Countians want? Only 10% of the voters to decide the future of our state and county? I hope not.
There are a number of ways to get to know the candidates and for what they stand. Our website, www.baldwingop.com has a candidate section. The candidates are invited to post their picture, bio and their positions on important issues as well as how they can be contacted. This site also has a calendar of events telling of meetings and forums that are planned in Baldwin County. Our local newspapers carry notices about meetings and forums as well as news releases and campaign ads.
Democracy is worth the effort. If you don’t think so just ask the Iraqis.
If you need more information on the Republican Party or our candidates you can email me at donmcgriff@yahoo.com or just call me at 251-379-0748.

Reasons for the Success of the Republican Party
By Don McGriff
Like most southern states, Alabama is rapidly becoming Republican. A few years ago there were no Republican elected officials in Baldwin County. Now, there are no elected Democrats. Why is that?
If you ask any crowd, “How many of you are Baldwin County natives?” The vast majority would not be. By the same token, if you ask a group of Republicans, “How many of you were one time Democrats?” The vast majority would answer they were once Democrats.
Almost 100% of those who converted to the Republican Party will tell you they
“didn’t leave the Democrats, the Democrats left them.” This cross-over started among the Caucasian population but is rapidly spreading among the Black population.
Not too many years ago, two events occurred that significantly changed the political landscape both locally and nationally.

As you can see there are many contested races in Baldwin County but none for Judgeships and Legislative seats.
We congratulate all who have decided to put themselves forward as candidates for public office. In the spirit of Ronald Reagan’s Eleventh Commandment ("Speak no evil of another Republican), I encourage all our candidates to make this election a presentation of ideas and not one of attack and critisism of the other candidate. You can point out the differences without personal attacks. Like my mother always said (God rest her soul), “Get ahead by what you can do, not by tearing others down.”
Having said that, put your gloves together and come out fighting. Everybody else should pick a candidate and go to work for that candidate.
Many forums are planned, try to be there to see what these fine candidates plan for your future.
I look forward to seeing you there.

Campaign 2006 has arrived and is getting heated.
Governor Riley made two appearances last Friday in the county. Both, to large and enthusiastic crowds.
The Robertsdale Coffee Club is getting bigger and better all the time. Reports are that Saturday’s meeting was large and with the four candidates for Court of Criminal Appeals, it got hot! I mean someone said, “almost fisticuffs.” This is like the old west campaigns. (I guess)
It you read this blog before 6 PM Wednesday the eighth, get down to Fly Creek Cafe in Fairhope for the Young Republican (To age 40) Candidate “Meet and Mingle.” In fact, lets all turn out to support the new Young Republican chapter.
Britton Bonner, a young Foley attorney has stepped forward to lead this group. I expect big things, these folks know how to be effective and have a good time too.
Be there!
